Lighting for Commercial Cultivation & Dispensaries

In businesses, one of the most important aspects of your brick-and-mortar building is your lighting. A showroom’s lighting should illuminate products in a flattering way. If you’re in the marijuana industry, you’ll also need to manage your lighting to cater to your plants. Getting it just right can be tricky; that’s why you should hire Vulcan.

Vulcan works with you to design lighting that can work in both your dispensary and your growing areas. Our high-tech fixtures are easy to monitor and control; with wi-fi functionality built-in, you can turn them on and off from anywhere! We install your lights quickly and efficiently, ensuring that your downtime is minimal.

Vulcan has a multifaceted installation process. In retail venues, our designers will work with you to craft displays that shine. At your cultivation facilities, we work with your master growers to produce setups that amp up your output. If you have any PPFD plans, that’s even better! We can customize your new setup to perfectly match your needs.

LED vs. HPS Grow Lights

If you’ve worked in the industry for some time, you’ll know that there are a wide array of grow light options for you to choose from. Two of the most popular are LED and HPS.

High-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting is the older standard. The soft orange glow is ubiquitous in the industry, and their installation cost is relatively low. These fixtures produce light by conducting electricity through a tube filled with sodium gas. Other names for HPS lighting include high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting or arc lights.

Since the creation of HPS lights in the early 20th century, they’ve enjoyed widespread popularity. Sodium-burning bulbs have been common features in public buildings and spaces for some time, with outdoor lighting (such as street lamps) making prolific use of the technology. The bulbs are more efficient than traditional incandescent options and they often last longer.

However, popularity doesn’t always equate to functionality. Though HPS lights burn brightly, that power comes with drawbacks. Some of their negative aspects include:

  • High heat production is a direct result of their operation. This may necessitate expensive ventilation reworking to prevent excessive heat in your cultivation spaces.
  • Older technologies tend to be less efficient; HPS is no exception. The high yields they produce are often accompanied by equally high energy consumption and electric bills.
  • Over time, HPS lights will start to burn out. This means that you’ll have to replace them often to maintain the same yields; often, you’ll need to change them out once a year.
  • Unlike LED lights, HPS fixtures often need to be given some time to “heat up”. Depending on which you use, it may take anywhere from five to ten minutes to properly start.

Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is an emerging technology in the cultivation industry. You’ve likely seen LED lighting elsewhere. They’re common fixtures on a wide array of products—from toys, remotes, and televisions to streetlights and industrial equipment. The versatility of LEDs is bolstered by low energy use and outstanding longevity. Both of these qualities have clear advantages.

Because LED lights consume far less energy than their HPS counterparts, they run much cooler. In terms of placement and logistics, this means that you can place them closer to the plants you’re growing. This is a fantastic benefit to smaller growers, where space constraints may make it difficult or impossible to install an HPS layout. (If you’re in a colder climate, however, it should be noted that you may need to supplement your lights with a heat source, such as HID.)

In terms of longevity and lifespan, LED setups are (once again) the clear winners. While they may be more expensive to set up, their lower maintenance costs will quickly pay for the price difference. A standard HPS light will run for about 10,000 hours; that’s a little over a year. In comparison, an LED setup will last around 50,000 hours or almost 6 years!

Some other benefits of LED lighting include:

  • Unlike HPS lights, LED options are focused. The light will only be directed where you want it to be, meaning you waste less energy.
  • LED lights lack the chemicals used in HPS bulbs, particularly mercury. If you drop and break an LED bulb, you don’t have to worry about moving away from it.
  • The color and intensity of LED lighting can be programmed to fit your needs. Vulcan Construction Group produces LED solutions that can even be controlled remotely.

Making The Switch – Lighting Renovations

With all of these benefits, you might consider switching. After all, the best businesses are the ones that grow and change with the times.

Before you do this, however, it’s worth taking some time to plan things out. You’ll want to consider factors such as downtime, disruptions, and cost. Some things you may want to think about are:

  • Installing new lighting fixtures incrementally to minimize downtime
  • Discussing energy-saving rebates with your utility company
  • Retuning and tweaking your HVAC settings to account for lower heat output
  • Stocking up on extra LED bulbs for the future

Of course, when you choose Vulcan, we’ll work alongside you throughout the process to ease the burden of the ordeal. We take all of these factors into consideration and design an installation plan and schedule that benefits you the most. Many of Vulcan’s clients can continue operations through the renovation process.

Vertical Grow Lighting

If you want to stretch your dollar even further, you may even consider switching from traditional plans to a vertical growing system. This strategy reimagines growing spaces by securing plants to vertical racks. Since the plants are no longer spread across your cultivation area like a carpet, you’ll gain more space, which means you’ll have room for more plants. In some cases, growers may even triple their output!

This conversion often comes with a price, however. Businesses looking to make the switch will need to consider a variety of factors. Beyond the basic restructuring, a vertical growing farm will need additional and often custom-built lighting to properly nurture each crop. Depending on where you are in the country, you may also need to take humidity changes and temperature differences into account.

Solar Lighting

If you want to keep stacking the savings and benefits of Vulcan’s innovative LED lighting solutions, you can also opt to utilize renewable energy. We offer a variety of solar-powered options for growers and businesses. Depending on how in-depth and extensive your setup is, you may even break free from utility bills and electrical costs.

While these systems may have been prohibitively expensive in the past, technological advances have lowered the price considerably. Moreover, the savings you’ll see from even a partial setup will pay for itself!
